four days or 27 miles

That’s how long the vw lasted before breaking down again. at least the engine is running great still: this time it was the transmission. I went around a corner and heard a couple faint clunks… a little farther and it got worse. I pulled over and attempted a U-turn, but it made lots of noise when putting pressure on the transmission. I eventually got it turned around by pushing it (thanks to the kid who was riding his bike the process went quicker), and shut it down. Since I was less than two miles from home, I walked/ jogged back and got the old van to tow it home. I forgot the camera when retrieving the vw, but took a couple pictures when I got home, so as soon as I make some photo galleries I’ll make one of for times the vw has broken down (I’ve got pictures for three times now this summer).
I really hate to give up on this car, but I may need to. I’ve never thought of anything as “cursed” before, but this car very well may be. I’ve broken down in the span of less than 100 miles and a tank full of gas this summer alone!

I know a way that you can have about twice as much time for your car than you do now.

Some good news:
I have found the problem with the differential. A circlip that holds the differential together came out of its seating, causing a gear in the differential to move out of place and completely disable the transmission. The only disassembly left to do is remove the wheel bearing so I can remove the driveshaft housing, and then reasembly of everything. It appears the financial cost of this fix will be three (four?) bottles of 80w-90 gear oil. Up soon: the fun part of reassembling the differential, reinstalling the transmission, hooking up the rear brakes & wheels, reinstalling the engine & re-tuning it.
Interesting Thoughts:
I don’t know how, but with all the freak problems I have had, (3 screws falling into the engine, leaking transmission, air in the brakes from a bad line, tarboard melting, and broken differential, and maybe one or two more), I have been spared pain to the wallet. I’d estimate the total cost of all these repairs to be about $200. Although you could also count the new transmission and engine as a result of some problems, they really were driven by other factors, and the decision made easier by these problems, so I count them as independent upgrades rather than repairs. I was able to fix the old engine & trans from any problems incurred to them.
